one? We’re just the people to install it!
Whether you call it a garbage disposal or garbage disposer (the latter is the more technically correct term), we’ll know exactly what you’re talking about any time you call to report a problem.
You know, like when your disposer makes a terrible racket that just won’t stop, even though there’s nothing inside it. When it’s leaking. Or when it it just plain stops running Whatever’s going on, we’ll accurately diagnose the problem and give you our best recommendation: to repair or replace. Because just like anything else mechanical, including your car, sometimes replacement is the better option and, ultimately, the more economical choice.

THINGS THAT CAN GO WRONG WITH YOUR GARBAGE DISPOSER

If you disposal is making a terrible racket, turn it off immediately and, for added safety, turn off the circuit breaker (or unscrew the fuse) that supplies it with power. Even then, use tongs, not your fingers, to empty it. Once that’s done and you’ve restored power, turn the disposer back on. If it’s still banging away, that means the blade, impeller, or motor (or some combination thereof) is probably damaged.

Next, what happens when you hear or spot water dripping from the bottom of the unit? The cause could be as simple as a loose bolt, or as “end of the road” calamitous as internal corrosion caused by rust. If it’s the latter, your disposer will need to be replaced.

Here’s another common symptom: you turn on your garbage disposer and the only activity is a steady humming sound. That tells you it’s jammed. And that’s another reason to pick up the phone and contact Your 1 Plumber.

WHAT NOT TO PUT INSIDE YOUR GARBAGE DISPOSER

To avoid repairs in the first place, don’t use your garbage disposer as a dumping ground for “any and everything” in the food chain. Otherwise, you’re pretty much asking for trouble.

Here’s a short list of things your garbage disposer was NOT built to process:

    • Any fibrous goods like lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and the like
    • Meat bones
    • Grease
    • Cooking oil
    • Fat
    • Flour
    • Coffee grinds
    • Paints
    • Chemical household cleaners
    • Medicines
